The Pride Youth Program is open to youth in grades 9-12 who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, or who are questioning. The program serves the north/northwest suburban region and meets weekly for a three hour block of time in Northfield, with a second night each week in Palatine, and a third night in Evanston in collaboration with the McGaw YMCA.
The Pride Youth Program provides a safe and confidential space for LGBT youth to build community and support each other. Program curriculum is designed to promote a sense of self, integration of sexual orientation into one’s whole personality, and the development of leadership and communication skills. Frank discussions about substance abuse, prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, healthy relationships, and the coming out process are integrated throughout the program, facilitated by professional staff and dedicated volunteers.
The Pride Youth Program has served over 190 LGBT youth in the past year and is a source of information and referrals for the entire Chicagoland area. Pride is a program of Links - North Shore Youth Health Service, a non-profit organization empowering young people to make informed, responsible decisions about their health, well-being, and sexuality.
